An Easy Mother’s Day “Gift” that Toddlers Can Make (+ Our Family’s Smoothie Bowl Recipe!)

It’s never too early to teach your little ones how to show appreciation for the people they love. Since Arlo was six months old, we’ve been sending snail mail to grandparents and loved ones from him and having him help sign cards for birthdays and other holidays, too! With Mother’s Day just a few days away, I wanted to share a few ideas for how to get (your significant other to get) your toddler involved in a little Mother’s Day pampering, by way of breakfast in bed!!!!

If your toddler is like ours, they love to “help”, right? One of Arlo’s most favorite things to do is “help” in the kitchen, so he and Jeff prepared this cute little breakfast-in-bed spread, where Arlo got to help with everything from the meal to the card to the flowers! I’m certainly not complaining! 😉

I partnered with ALDI on this post and can say first hand that they have an incredible selection of breakfast items. I’m blown away by the high-quality of product they’re able to offer for an affordable price point! Below, I’ll share a bit about how exactly Arlo helped make this Mother’s Day breakfast come together in case you’re looking for super simple ideas to involve your little one. Plus, I’m sharing the recipe they made… our family’s go-to smoothie bowl!!

Make an Easy Breakfast-in-Bed Dish

Choose a dish that involves some pouring or mixing, a toddler’s favorite task, but nothing too complex or time consuming since their attention span is short! Simple pancakes (I recommend Aunt Maple’s Buttermilk Pancake Mix, from ALDI!), an omelet (they’ll love adding the mix-ins) or a smoothie bowl!! Arlo is obsessed with smoothies  and smoothie bowls and they’re a fave of mine too, so that’s what Jeff landed on. It’s great because he can help toss all the ingredients in the blender and then BOOM! A quick mix and ready to go. As a bonus, he can help “pour” all the toppings too.

We made smoothies a lot before our kitchen reno, and are starting up again now that it’s done! No two are the same really, but I wanted to share the perfect berry smoothie bowl base recipe. You can add so much to it, or swap stuff out depending on what you have (Jeff loves peanut butter in his, and I love to put some spinach in the ones we make for Arlo!) but this is our tried and true fave, and you can get all the ingredients at ALDI!

The Perfect Berry Smoothie Bowl

Prep time:

Total time:

Yield: 1-2 Servings

  • Smoothie Bowl Base:
  • ½ cup Friendly Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • ½ cup Specially Selected Indulgent Honey Greek Yogurt
  • ½ cup Millville Old Fashioned Oats
  • ½ a banana (fresh or frozen)
  • ½ cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • ¼ cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Optional:
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • Handful of spinach
  • Toppings:
  • Simply Nature Organic Coconut Chia Granola
  • Fresh Berries or Other Fruit
  • Simply Nature Chia Seeds
  1. Start by making the perfect smoothie base: combine almond milk, honey Greek yogurt, oats, and banana until smooth in your blender. Tip: give the blender some time to work – the oats might take a few minutes to incorporate!
  2. Add your berries – I used blueberries, cherries, and strawberries, but feel free to use your favorites – ALDI also sells raspberries, and a berry medley – score! Blend until smooth. Tip: Add a splash of your almond milk if needed here to really blend all berries.
  3. Add your cinnamon, and if adding, your peanut butter, and blend well.
  4. Pour your smoothie into a bowl, then top as you see fit! That’s it – four steps and you’ve got the perfect smoothie bowl.

For what it’s worth, and you may already know this if you follow closely, I’m picky about my granola!! Ha! I had never tried the Simply Nature Organic Granola before but WOW. It’s now one of my favorites. So whether you’re making this bowl or not, you should grab a box on your next ALDI trip! SO good.

Let Them Pick (or Make) The Card

For a good time, tell your toddler to pick out a card for mom without any rules. Haha! Arlo picked out this one from our stash, which is actually one of my favorite cards… even if it isn’t necessarily a Mother’s Day one. 😉 He loves pointing out rainbows right now, likely because he knew the word once and I freaked out with excitement, so now he expects that reaction every time!!! #proudmom

And perhaps the simplest but most special gift of all time is a handmade card from your kiddo, so that’s a great option too! Whether Arlo makes the card or not, we always let him add his own flair to it… mine had a few colored pencil lines and a sticker of a very well known snowman. Haha!

Go On A Backyard or Neighborhood Flower Hunt

Arlo is currently a flower-smelling fanatic. We can’t look away for one second without finding his nose buried in a flower going “MMMMM!” Haha!!!

To finish off the breakfast tray, go on a backyard flower hunt and let your little one pick out the most perfect flower for Mama! Pop it in a little bud vase and place it on the tray. SO easy.
